Why Self-Pay Therapy Might Be the Right Choice for You

I believe that therapy should feel personal, supportive, and free from unnecessary red tape. That’s why my clients choose to pay out-of-pocket for sessions, also known as self-pay.
It might sound like a big decision at first, but self-pay therapy actually comes with a lot of benefits that give you more privacy, flexibility, and control over your care.

What Are the Benefits of Self-Pay?
No Diagnosis Required
When you go through insurance, they usually require a formal mental health diagnosis just to cover sessions. With self-pay, there's no need to label your experience just to get support. That means more privacy for you and no permanent diagnosis in your medical record.

No Time Limits or Session Caps
Insurance often restricts how many sessions you can have, how long they last, or how often you can go. With self-pay, we can meet as often as you need, for as long as you need. It’s all about what works best for you.
You Can Still Use Your Insurance—Just Differently
If you have out-of-network benefits (like with many PPO plans), you may be able to get reimbursed for part of your sessions. I can provide a simple form called a superbill for you to submit to your insurance company.
HSA/FSA Friendly
You can use your Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) to pay for sessions, which can make therapy more affordable using pre-tax dollars.
No Insurance Rules, No Paperwork Headaches
With self-pay, your therapy stays between you and me. No reporting to insurance, no treatment plans for approval, and no hoops to jump through. Just real, honest support without outside interference.
Therapy That’s All About You
Self-pay gives us the space to focus entirely on your goals and your growth not what an insurance company will approve. Whether you’re working through anxiety, life changes, relationships, or something else, we’ll go at your pace, with full confidentiality and care.
